New Montages -text My new works are from montages using photographs of old and new beautiful Modern Architecture, and photographs of beautiful women models.
My cut down photos of models then show only the bare essential part of the image, perhaps only showing part of a full lip and a crease to the side, possibly a suggestion of a noise. Each decision I make is one of the essential, to either keep in or attempt to remove more and more. I keep only the important aspects of the image to allow the brain a chance to fill in the missing, when looking at the finished montage.
My fragmentary use of portraiture allows me to make use of upsetting scale, which has always been an essential aspect of my work.
Architecture brings a style and sets the scene. The position, scale and setting behave as a beginning, a start of fiction. My use of architecture and portraiture is a means to an end, the work or experience of the work happens when these two elements clash together.
My images are reminiscent of the ‘Fantastic Architecture’ drawings of 60’s Pol Bury, Geoffrey Hendricks & Wolf Vostell and their ideas of ‘Impossible Architecture’.
Influential people for my work have been works of Samuel Beckett, Franz Kafka (esp. Metamorphosis), John Wyndham, Gordon Matta Clark and Nikolaus Pevsner.
